Baildon RUFC

21 - 19

(HT 0-0)

Roundhegians RFC

Roundhegians fell to their first league defeat of the season in a tightly contested match away at Baildon. The Greens bucked the trend of slow starts with a score inside the first minute through Oli Batchelor on his league debut. The hosts wrestled themselves back into the contest and eventually scored through some old fashioned pressure as they mauled their way over from a lineout. The rest of the half was relatively even, yet, Hegians ' indiscipline once again started to cause them issues. Towards the end of the first quarter, the slope on which Hegians were playing up began to tell with the home side profiting through good kicking and a score from a pick and go in the corner. The second quarter remained scoreless, although Hegians were reduced to 14 after Ieuan was binned for an accumulation of penalties. A chaotic first half ended 14-5.

The second half started in a similar vein to the first as both sides resumed the arm wrestle, cancelling each other out until the home side were able to get over again through Hegians' ill-discipline (21-5). Both sides continued  the dance until Hegians were reduced to 14 for the second time with Jacob Baberecki binned for reasons unbeknownst to anybody on the pitch or sideline. Hegians replied relatively soon after, through a charge down from Luke Allen (21-12), to set up an intriguing last 25 minutes with Jacob Babirecki scoring again from a tap penalty to close the margin to two for the last 8 minutes (21-19).  The travelling Greens were unable to find another way through the Baildon defence with the hosts holding out for a scintillating 21-19 win. An evenly matched game and lays the foundation for a cracking return leg at the Mem later this season.

It was a Player of the Match performance from Luke Allen that came close to grabbing the points for Hegians, who are back in action on Saturday at home against Huddersfield Laund Hill (3pm KO 24.10.26)
