Hegians Claim Narrow Win over Wheatley Hills

The men in green continued their unbeaten start with a tough 29-24 win over newly promoted Wheatley Hills, making it three wins from three and back-to-back victories at the memorial ground.

It was poor start from the home side with ill-discipline and sloppy play allowing the visitors far too much territory; a penalty in front of the sticks and Hills took a 0-3 lead from the tee after 10 minutes  of play.  Hegians settled into  the game and after some solid system play off of a lineout went through the hands putting Ben Beale in the corner after an assist from Charlie Cohan (7-3). The contest see sawed again, as Hegians struggled to win the field position battle the visitors made the most of their pressure and  scored (7-10).  Hegians then wrestled themselves back into the contest as some patient forward phases led to them retaking the lead shortly before half time as Sam Trutch picked from the base of the ruck and scored, converted by Ewan Taylor to give the men in green, white and black a slender lead of 12-10.  Hegians then managed to extend their lead right before the break as a solid catch under pressure and fend put Ieuan Applebee over for another score; the advantage at half time was 19-10.

The second half was very much a tale of two halves of 20 minutes. The home side scored very early in the corner as Ieuan got his second of the day taking it 24-10. But just when Hegians thought they were going to get a roll on, the visitors responded with a score taking it to 24-17 and setting up a frantic final quarter. The home side didn’t help themselves as they had to play the final 20 minutes with 14 after suffering successive yellow cards. Ben Stevens went for a high shot and soon after he re-entered the field Hegians were forced to play out the last ten minutes without Charlie as he went for a no arms tackle. The hosts did manage to get over again through Ben Beale (29-17), but Wheatley Hills scored with around 2 minutes left to make it a nervy end to the contest. The hosts eventually survived numerous attacking phases to see out the result. Winning 29-24 with another Player of the match performance from Ieuan Applebee.

The men in Green know they will need to be vastly improved as they go on the road to Baildon, next Saturday, whilst the super 2s are also travelling away to Aireborough.
