Roundhegians RFC

62 - 21

(HT 31-7)

Wheatley Hills RUFC

Hegians welcomed Wheatley Hills to the memorial ground with only 2 changes as Nat Robinson and Tom Illingworth returned to the squad to replace Andy Mulligan and Greg Robinson who were unavailable.

Hegians were soon off to a quick start as they forced Wheatley Hills on to the defensive and from a poor kick which went to Jonny Thorpe he brought it back across the field and his kick deep into the 22 allowed Tom Bennett to score a fortunate try in the corner. A superb conversion from Alex Jones from wide out took Hegians into a 7-0 lead.

From the kick off Hegians were on the attack again  when they moved the ball wide from deep in their own half. The ball was carried well down the wing by Ali Coe and Henry Wareham before a nice off load to Elliot Jackson put him in space and no one could catch him as he raced in from 35 metres to score a try. Alex Jones added the conversion to take Hegians into a 14-0 lead.

From the kick off an excellent kick from James Dobson pushed Hegians back into the opposition 22 and with Jonny Thorpe and Dale Cowling forcing the winger into touch, Hegians were on the attack again. A charge down from James Dobson led to a penalty 25 metres out and Alex Jones kicked the conversion to take Hegians 17 points up.

Hegians were confident now but in their enthusiasm were guilty of giving penalties away and this allowed Wheatley Hills to get on the attack and after some good tackling initially Hegians  were guilty of leaving a big gap in the middle  that allowed Wheatley Hills to score a converted try.

The response from Hegians was immediate as they went through a number of phases as the forwards carried  the ball well. A good run from Dale Cowling almost made it to the line and quick support from Harry Wollaston won the ball and Jonny Dobson attacked the line and a neat off load allowed Dave Gregory to score close to the posts. The conversion took the score to 24-7.

There was still time for Hegians to get back on the attack as another good run from Ali Coe took Hegians close to the line but a dropped pass relieved the pressure. A loose kick from Wheatley Hills was taken by Alex Jones who ran the ball back beating several defenders to score a superb try.

Half time Roundhegians 31 – Wheatley Hills 7

The second half started off in similar manner to the end of the first half as good tackles by Henry Wareham and Harry Wollaston followed by an excellent kick from James Dobson took Hegians back on the attack. A great tackle from Joe Blackman-Gibbs continued the pressure and as the ball went wide a good pass from Elliot Jackson put Jonny Thorpe in space and he outpaced the defence to score in the corner.

With the big lead Hegians were guilty of relaxing a bit too much and Wheatley Hills responded by raising their efforts and soon scored a converted try. Five minutes later Wheatley Hills added a second try to close the gap to 15 points.

This created a positive response from Hegians and a good backs move allowed Tom Bennett to score his second try in the corner. Another good kick put Hegians into the opposition 22 and when Wheatley Hills conceded a penalty, Ali Coe took a quick tap and forced his way over the line for a try which was converted by Alex Jones.

There was still time for Hegians to score 2 tries, the first after a great line break from James Dobson followed by an off load to brother Jonny allowed him to score close to the posts. In the last act of the game Hegians ran the ball wide and with  an overlap developing Elliot Jackson was able to go through the gap for his second try

Full Time Roundhegians 62 – Wheatley Hills 21

A great all round display  by the team with some good individual performances throughout the team as the hard work in training is starting to show. However, it was James Dobson who caught the eye as he controlled possession and territory with an excellent display of tactical kicking

Next Week Hegians are away at Yarnbury and hoping to continue the good form
