Roundhegians RFC

47 - 10

(HT 14-3)

Wath Upon Dearne RUFC

Hegians were able to select a strong team at home v Wath with Dale Cowling and Ewan Cameron returning to come in for Tom Bennett and Jonny Thorpe who were unavailable. Dave Gregory dropped out on the morning of the game which allowed Iain Adamson to come on to the bench and make his debut for the 1st Team.

Despite the wet weather, the pitch was  in surprisingly good condition and their was never any doubt that the game would be played. Hegians were soon on the attack and within 2 minutes were awarded a penalty for not rolling away. Alex Jones just pushed the ball wide. For the next 20 minutes Hegians tried to get on the attack but some good defending from Wath and a lit bit of inaccuracy from Hegians prevented a score. Hegians always looked dangerous when they could get the ball to wingers Ewan Cameron and Alex Miyambo who looked dangerous whenever they got the ball. Eventually Hegians were able to push the ball wide to the right wing  and with an overlap Alex Jones was able to step inside to score a try out wide. He followed it up with an excellent conversion to take the score to 7-0. The rest of the half followed a similar pattern until James Dobson made a break and chipped the ball through, Elliot Jackson was the quickest to respond and hacked the ball on and won the race for the touchdown to score the try. With Alex Jones adding the conversion the score went to  14-0.

Before half time Wath were able to get on to the attack and despite some good defence from Hegians they were starting to leak penalties and with one awarded under the posts, they opted to take the kick to take the half time score to 14-3

Half time : Roundhegians 14 – Wath 3

Hegians started the 2nd half well as they were able to go through a series of phases with Henry Wareham creating a large hole in the Wath defence before pushing the ball wide to the right and this allowed winger Alex Miyambo to score a good try in the corner. Within 2 minutes a good kick from James Dobson pushed Hegians back on the attack. A poor clearance kick went to  Elliot Jackson who ran it back and  chipped the ball through and Alex Jones was first to the ball to score the try and make sure that Hegians had earned the bonus point.

Wath responded by coming back on the attack and it took some good tackling to keep them out but they were leaking penalties and after a while the referee lost patience and awarded a penalty try to Wath.

Hegians responded almost immediately when James Dobson chipped over the top, collecting his own kick and feeding the ball to Dale Cowling who galloped in from 35 metres out. The conversion now took the lead to 33-10 and the game was over. At this point Hegians relaxed and actually started to play some good rugby as Wath started to tire after their hard defensive work.

Hegians added a good try when  Henry Wareham gave an inside pass to Dave Wilson who had cut a good line to score close to the posts and the final try involved  a cut out pass from Alex Jones to Alex Miyambo who made good ground before passing inside to Dave Wilson who fed Alex Jones to score the try for his hat trick and with his conversion this took the final score to 47-10 and Alex Jones had scored 27 of these.

Full Time  Roundhegians 47- Wath 10

A good solid win for Hegians who were not at their best in the first half but this was a lot to do with a committed effort from Wath who tackled well and did not make it easy for Hegians. Once Hegians were ahead they started to play some good rugby and produced some good tries.

The next league game is away at Old Grovians on 9th November ko 2.15pm and Hegians can expect a tough game as always against them.
