Roundhegians 17 – Thornensians 0

In the last league game of the year Hegians had to face Thornensians on a terrible day for playing rugby as the wet weather in the days before the game had made the pitch quite heavy. Hegians had to make a few changes as Sam Trutch came into the 2nd row and Greg Robinson came onto the bench.

The game started off brightly as both teams tried too play rugby despite the conditions and Thornensians were able to gain territory by some good kicking from their 10. Hegians were able to work their way out of their own half due to the effectiveness of their set piece and as the half went on they gradually started to put pressure on the opposition. However, some good defence from the visitors prevented a score.

Hegians thought they had grabbed the lead when they created space for Tom Bennett to go over in the left hand corner but the referee decided there was a knock on and awarded a scrum to Thornensians. It did not take long for Hegians to make the breakthrough as a clever chip by James Dobson allowed Elliot Jackson to win the race and score the first try for Hegians after 33 minutes. Alex Jones added the 2 points for the conversion.

From the kick off Hegians again made good ground and forced their way into the visitors half of thee field. However, just before half time Rory Wollaston made an interception and ran 50 metres to score in the corner. A superb conversion from Alex Jones took the score to 14-0 at half time.

Half Time Roundhegians 14 – Thornensians 0

From the kick off Hegians came straight back up the field and almost scored another try but in the process were awarded a penalty and Alex Jones had no hesitiation in taking the 3 points on offer to tae the lead to 17-0.

From this point the conditions became almost impossible to play good rugby. The rain combined with a heavy churned up pitch made it impossible for either team to string more than 2 or 3 passes together without dropping the ball. The visitors tried hard to create pressure but the Hegians defence never looked like giving anything away.

Eventually the referee blew up for the end of the match and Hegians had achieved a good solid victory in difficult playing conditions to maintain their place at the top of the table. The win was built on a strong team defensive effort as Hegians gave nothing away all game.
