Wath Upon Dearne RUFC

38 - 6

(HT 0-0)

Roundhegians RFC

Wath 38 -Roundhegians 6

Hegians travelled to Wath knowing that it was going to be a tough fixture against a team that has been undefeated at home all season. With Jonny Dobson, Tom Foxton and Dave Gregory unavailable Hegians were forced to rearrange the pack slightly.

With the wet weather all week the game was transferred to the 2nd team pitch at Wath, which was in surprisingly good condition. Hegians got ff to a bright start with the wind behind them and looked to score but on the small pitch the backs found it hard to get round the opposition and score a try. However, the pressure was enough to force a penalty on 5 minutes that Alex Jones converted to take the score to 3-0. A further kick on 12 minutes from Alex Jones took Hegians into a 6-0 lead and with some good kicking from James Dobson Hegians looked to add to the score.

Wath then rallied and some strong running combined with some weak tackling from Hegians allowed Wath to force their way into the Hegians 22 until they forced their way over for an unconverted try. For the next 15 minutes Wath were in complete control as they forced a series of penalties and dominated the set piece at both scrum and line out and forced their way over for 3 more tries and take a lead of 24-6.

Hegians were in disarray at this point but managed to rally towards the end of the half. Hegians were awarded a series of kickable penalties that they turned down as they now needed tries but could not force their way over the line and therefore did not add to their score

Half time Wath 24 – Roundhegians 6

Having to play against a strong wind in the second half Hegians conceded a try almost immediately and it looked like things would become increasingly difficult from that point. However, for the rest of the half Hegians actually played some of their best rugby , speeding the game up and forcing some penalties and errors from the opposition.

The game was slowed down due to a series of penalties conceded by both teams as the referee became more unhappy with both teams and started awarding yellow cards. However, despite a lot of effort from Hegians they never looked like scoring much more than a consolation try. In fact, Hegians could not even manage that as the game petered out into a comfortable win to Wath.

Full time Wath 38- Roundhegians 6

Wath are a good team at home and produced a well deserved win as they outplayed Hegians to produce some good rugby. However, Hegians will be disappointed in their performance and the fact that it took them so long to respond to the challenge from Wath.

Hegians will be looking for a better performance on Saturday when they entertain Old Grovians at home. Kickoff is now 3.00pm
