Roundhegians 40 Goole 14
After a good win away at Selby, Hegians were looking for another win at home against Goole, who had been defeated in their first 3 games. With a few people unavailable, this gave scrum half Cameron Deuchars and centre Elliot Thompson the chance to get their first league start for the 1st team. In addition, Jonny Thorpe returned to the team and Andy Mulligan finally managed to make himself available for a game.
From the kick off, Hegians were immediately on the attack and pressurising the Goole defence. From a good lineout on halfway, Hegians produced a couple of good carries through the middle, which sucked in the defence and allowed James Dobson to put Alex Jones in space and although he could have scored he let the ball go wide to Alex Miyambo who was able to walk in for a try in the corner. A superb conversion by Alex Jones took Hegians into a 7-0 lead. From the kick off, Hegians were soon on the attack again and good defence was stopping Goole making any progress. A good turnover by winger Alex Miyambo allowed Hegians to get onto the attack. This was followed by a good offload from Elliot Thompson to James Dobson who put Alex Jones in space and he put winger Tom Bennett in space to score a certain try, only to be brought back for a forward pass.
Goole then had their first break with a good run by the centre through the middle and looked to score a certain try but a poor pass messed up the chance. e After a penalty was conceded, Hegians pushed the ball into the corner for a line out.Goole conceded a penalty but instead of opting for the lineout, James Dobson too it quickly and put Alex Jones in space, who was able to create a try for Tom Bennett in the corner. Another superb conversion meant thatHegians took a 14-0 lead after 17 minutes.
From the kick off, Goole won the tap back and from this ended up with a penalty, allowing Goole into the Hegians 22 and some pressure on the Hegians line. The Hegians defence was strong though and were able to protect their line and force the knock on. After 25 minutes Hegians forced a penalty and opted for the corner again but were held up over the line to force a goal line drop out.
Hegians started throwing the ball around again as they knew they had the pace to score but again were let down by a forward pass that would have allowed Tom Bennett to score another try. A kick out by Goole was received but a pass to Alex Jones in allowed him to run at pace and a couple of side steps allowed him to cruise through the whole of the Goole defence to score under the posts from 50 metres out. With his conversion, this took the lead to 21-0.
There was still time for Hegians to score again as on 38 minutes Alex Jones put Alex Miyambo in space and he evaded his opposite number t score a good try in the corner. Another superb conversion took the score to 28-0 which was a fair reflection of the dominance shown by Hegians throughout the half.
Half time Roundhegians 28- Goole 0
The second half started brightly for Hegians when an interception by Elliot Jackson almost led to a try. A good kick from James Dobson led to a lineout near the Goole line but Goole held out and worked their way out of the 22. A good chip by James Dobson led to a chase for the ball and in all the confusion wingerTom Bennett was able to get the touchdown for Hegians fifth try.
With the game won, Hegians were a bit guilty of relaxing too much and Goole, who could have easily given up, responded well and started to put some pressure on the Hegians defence. This was rewarded with a good try to take the score to 33-7. On 55 minuutes Hegians gained a penalty in midfield and another good kick from James Dobson allowed Hegians to score from a line out on the Goole line as Henry Wareham forced his way over from short range.
The rest of the game was played out in the Hegians half as Goole exerted some pressure and Hegians were forced to defend. Hegians received a yellow card that made them have to defend even more and eventually Goole scored a second try. The game slowly petered out until the final whistle, as Hegians finished off as deserved winners 40-14.
A good victory for Hegians who were on top right from the start and the result was never in doubt. Elliot Thompson and Cameron Deuchars both had good games on their debut and James Dobson played well, controlling territory and possession for Hegians. It was good to get another 4 tries shared by the two wingers Tom Bennett and Alex Miyambo.
Next week Hegians have another difficult game away at Dinnington.
