Roundhegians got their 2026-27 season underway with a confident 43-17 victory away at Sheffield Tigers 2s. Hegians got themselves in the arm wrestle early and were rewarded after good pressure and some fast hands from Ewan Taylor put Ben Beale over in the corner on his competitive debut to score the first try of the campaign. The Greens were then forced into an early reshuffle as Dylan Winspear (who’d forked out £62 pounds on a taxi after locking himself out!) fell victim to a hamstring strain and couldn’t continue. We wish him a speedy recovery and a spare set of keys!
The 1932s replied with a smart kick as the winger crossed into the corner to equalize at 5-5. Roundhegians replied 8 minutes later with a smart pick from the ruck allowing Alex Miyambo to go over untouched, Taylor adding the extras for 12-5. Hegians pulled further ahead as some patient forward work off the lineout allowed Mupa ‘Young Bull’ Hembapu to open his senior account taking it to 17-5. The advantage was extended with some powerful running off the kick-off from Ieuan and fantastic support play from Luke Allen and Archie Naylor creating fast ball to devastating effect, a Harper-Bridge pass put Miyambo over for his second shortly before half-time, converted to take it to 24-5.
The second half started in much the same vain as the first, dominated by set pieces and smart Hegians pressure releasing a last-minute wrap-around for Taylor to score virtually untouched and extending the lead to 31-5 following his conversion. The 1932s offered some recourse as an out-of-back-pass and injection of pace allowed them to touch down and convert, reducing the deficit to 31-12. Hegians then extended their lead 10 minutes later with a brilliant catch-and-flop as Beale collected his second of the contest bringing us to 36-12. The Hegians scoring concluded 5 minutes later with some Taylor close-contact fast feet securing his second, converting to take the score to 43-12. The 1932s had the last laugh, a close-range barge over which went unconverted, bringing the full-time score to 43-17.
A fantastic start with solid performances from both backs and forwards highlighted with a Player of the match performance from Alex Miyambo. A fantastic platform to build on as we welcome Bradford & Bingley to the ‘Mem’ for the first home game next Saturday.
